Holy See: Peace is Possible in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict
2016-07-05 Vatican Radio
(Vatican Radio) The Permanent Observer to United Nations Archbishop Ivan Jurkovic has offered an intervention at the United Nations International Conference in Support of Israeli-Palestinian Peace.
“The Holy See believes that the peace process between Israelis and Palestinians can move forward only if it is directly negotiated between the Parties,” Archbishop Jurkovic said, with the strong support of the international community, as this international conference is meant to catalyze.”
He re-affirmed the Holy See’s support for a “two-state solution,” citing affirmations of Benedict XVI and Pope Francis.
However, Archbishop Jurkovic said, “the Holy See also believes that the whole peace process does not depend solely on formal negotiations, no matter how indispensable these are.” He insisted, “Peace cannot be achieved if healing and reconciliation, mutual recognition and respect at the personal and communitarian levels do not accompany political solutions.”
He also noted the importance of religions and believers in the peace process in the region: “They must put an end to mutual hatred that is lending credence to a ‘clash of civilizations’.” The Holy See, he said, “reiterates its appeal to all religious leaders to denounce and reject every spurious form and perversion of religion to foment violence, and to hold on to the conviction that peace is not only possible and desirable, but is our common call and duty.”
Below, please find the full text of the Intervention of Archbishop Ivan Jurkovic, Head of the Delegation of the Holy See to the United Nations International Conference in Support of Israeli-Palestinian Peace:
PEACE IS POSSIBLE – FRAMEWORKS FOR A WAY FORWARD
Geneva, 29 June 2016
Mr. Chair,
The Holy See commends the United Nations Committee for the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People for organizing this conference to consider lessons learned from past Peace Conferences, build upon achievements, however modest they might have been, and identify new ideas in the emerging approaches, in order to provide an ever stronger international support to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process.
The Palestinian Question has been asked, and remains unsatisfactorily answered since the birth of the United Nations. Almost sixty-nine years after its adoption by the United Nations General Assembly, Resolution 181 remains only half-fulfilled. Decades of negotiations have failed to achieve the creation of a Palestinian State. Continued: http://www.news.va/en/news/holy-see-peace-is-possible-in-israeli-palestinian

Abbas Says Cairo Peace Summit only after Settlement Freeze
Palestinian preconditions include talks on basis of pre-1967 lines, set timetable; Netanyahu said open to meeting Abbas under Egyptian aegis
By Avi Issacharoff - July 13, 2016
Palestinian leaders have presented several preconditions for participating in a trilateral Israeli-Egyptian-Palestinian peace summit in Cairo, including a freeze on Israeli settlement construction, a Palestinian official told The Times of Israel.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday reportedly told Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry he would be willing to meet with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in Cairo for talks hosted by President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi. The Prime Ministers Office did not deny the report by the Saudi-owned, pan-Arab news outlet Al-Arabiya. It said in a statement that whether the issue was discussed or not, Israel has always said it is prepared to conduct direct bilateral negotiations with no preconditions.
The senior Palestinian official said Tuesday that Abbas had conditioned his participation on Israel agreeing to stop settlement construction and accepting a set timeline for negotiations. Israel would also have to acquiesce to negotiations based on the pre-1967 lines and pledge ahead of time to implement any agreements reached in the talks. A senior Egyptian official told The Times of Israel on Tuesday that Egypt was seeking a formula for renewal of negotiation that would be accepted by both sides. The official said it might be too early to invite both sides to a summit, since the sides did not yet agree about the goals of the talks.  Continued:

Jordan's King Israel Blatantly Changing Jerusalem Status Quo

In interview, Abdullah also argues that Palestinian-Israeli conflict feeds extremism in the region
By Dov Lieber - August 15, 2016 - The Jordanian king accused Israel on Monday of blatantly changing the status quo at important landmarks and heritage sites in Jerusalem, and restricting the rights of the capital's Arab residents. He also charged that the perpetuation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict fuels extremism in the region.
In an interview with the Jordanian newspaper al-Dastur that focused mainly on upcoming parliamentary elections, the Islamic State group and the economic burden posed by Syrian refugees, Abdullah II was also asked what tools his country had to wield against "Israeli violations" in Jerusalem and its holy sites.
"We are continuously dealing with these recurring violations and attacks carried out by Israel and extremist groups, and the blatant attempts to change the status quo in Jerusalem, at its landmarks, its heritage sites and historical identity," the king responded.
He added that his nation is also working to counter Israeli 'violations of the rights' of Arab residents, a crackdown against them and their displacement."
The king did not specify the Al Aqsa Mosque when addressing alleged Israeli attempts to change the status quo at the sensitive holy place. The Palestinians have accused Israel of trying to take over the site, a charge Israel has repeatedly and vehemently denied.
However, Abdullah did say his country would continue its "historical and religious" duty at the Temple Mount " known as the Haram al Sharif by Muslims "by defending it from what he called 'repeated stormings' by extremist Jews, and by opposing attempts "to divide the al Aqsa Mosque temporally or spatially."
Visits by right-wing religious Jews, some of whom support the changing of the status quo at the holy site by allowing Jewish prayer there, are seen as "stormings" of the Mount by Palestinians, and have resulted in frequent clashes and violence.
The monarch said his country would use all legal and political means to pressure Israel on the Jerusalem issue, including United Nations resolutions.
The Jordanian leader was also asked if he thought the opportunity for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict had passed, especially as "stormy conditions" in the region have diverted attention from the conflict in the Holy Land.
While he didn't indicate he thought the two-state solution was dead, Abdullah called the Palestinian issue his nation's top priority and the conflict's resolution a matter of 'supreme national interest.' Failure to resolve the conflict through a two-state solution 'is feeding violence and extremism in the region 'the king said'

Egypt's Sisi says Putin ready to host Middle East peace talks

AFP - August 24, 2016 - Banner Icon Israel-Palestine Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said his Russian counterpart and close ally Vladimir Putin wants to host an Israeli-Palestinian summit to revive peace talks, in an interview published Monday.
Sisi told state newspaper editors that he believed Israel was increasingly convinced of the need for a peace deal, saying it was a "positive sign."
But Palestinian infighting between the Islamist Hamas rulers of Gaza and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas's Fatah in the West Bank remained an obstacle, he said in the interview.
Talks between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Abbas have been suspended since 2014, despite a push by Washington and France to resume the peace process.
Sisi, who is seen as having good ties with both Israel and Abbas's Palestinian Authority, has also been pushing for a resumption of negotiations.
"Putin has told me that he is ready to receive both (Abbas) and Netanyahu in Moscow to carry out direct talks to find a solution and solve the issue," Sisi said. http://www.yourmiddleeast.com/news/egypts-sisi-says-putin-ready-to-host-middle-east-peace-talks_42385

Israel Agrees to US-Initiated Peace Summit; Palestinians Demand Preconditions
Jordanian Report: by Ruthie Blum - August 28, 2016
According to a report in the Jordanian press, Israel has agreed to a US-initiated three-way peace summit, while the Palestinian Authority is demanding preconditions, Israel’s Channel 10 reported on Sunday.
The government-owned newspaper Al Ra’i reported that the administration in Washington recently proposed the renewal of talks between Israel and the PA under its auspices. However, said the report – based on statements made by a PLO Executive Committee member – while Israel insisted that these be held with no preconditions, the PA said it would only consent if Israel first halted settlement construction and released another tranche of convicts.
“We welcome any activity whose goal is to move the political process forward, but there are conditions that Israel has to fulfill in order for the meeting not to deal solely with economic relations,” said Wassel Abu Yousef. “We are currently interested in progress along the lines of the French initiative.” http://www.algemeiner.com/2016/08/28/jordanian-report-israel-agrees-to-us-initiated-peace-summit-palestinians-demand-preconditions/

Netanyahu and Abbas to hold first official talks in 6 years in Moscow
By The Jerusalem Connection | Sep 9, 2016 | By Herb Keinon, JPost
The Middle East diplomatic process may be moving north. Russia’s Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas have agreed “in principle” to meet in Moscow. The announcement by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova at a weekly news conference culminates a week of mixed signals from Jerusalem and Ramallah, regarding a meeting under the auspices of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.
Both Netanyahu and Abbas have said throughout the week that they were interested, but that the other side was putting up obstacles.
Zakharova said that the “main thing now” is to choose “the right moment” for the meeting. “Intensive contacts on this matter are continuing,” she said.
Although Netanyahu said earlier in the week in The Hague that he would be willing to meet in Moscow if the Palestinians did not put any preconditions on the talks, there was no word from his office following the Russian Foreign Ministry statement regarding the matter.
Palestinian officials said early in the week as well that Abbas was willing to hold talks without conditions.
Putin’s special Mideast envoy, Mikhail Bogdanov, was in the region this week and held talks with both Netanyahu and senior PA officials in Jerusalem and Ramallah about the idea.
Noting that US mediation efforts of 2013-2014 failed, Zakharova said that Moscow is convinced “of the need to resume the negotiation process” in order to normalize the situation, and “find a compromise solution on the basis of international law.” She said that the continuing deadlock is a cause of “great concern,” and leads to a “steady deterioration of the situation on the ground.”

In Final Meeting with PM, Obama Says Two-State Solution Must be Kept Alive
President urges ‘stable, secure Israel’ alongside ‘Palestinian homeland’, raises ‘profound concerns’ over settlements;
Netanyahu thanks US for military aid, says Israel will never give up on goal of durable peace

US President Barack Obama said Wednesday he wants to ensure that efforts for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict will be kept alive beyond his presidency, as he met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for likely the last time before he leaves the White House in January.

Speaking in front of the press before their meeting at a hotel in Manhattan, the two leaders broadcast an extremely friendly vibe, sweeping under the rug years of a famously testy relationship.
But along with the smiles, Obama indicated that in their private talks he would push Netanyahu on ways to get back to the negotiating table with the Palestinians and curbing settlement activity in the West Bank.
Senior US officials said the private part of the meeting lasted a little over half an hour and Obama was more pointed, raising “profound US concerns” that settlement-building was eroding prospects for peace.
Netanyahu challenged that notion, said one official, adding that the two leaders had not “papered over” their differences.
But in public, the two were all smiles, only briefly mentioning peace efforts and other divisive issues. The word “Iran,” a country whose nuclear program has been the source of considerable friction between them, was not mentioned once.

New Iranian Threat to Israel: ‘We Will Turn Tel Aviv and Haifa Into Dust’

September 21, 2016 11:07 am - by Barney Breen-Portnoy

Iran demonstrated once again on Wednesday that its animus toward Israel has not abated in the wake of the nuclear agreement it reached last year with six world powers.

Reuters reported that a banner on the side of a truck carrying a new long-range Iranian ballistic missile — the Zolfaqar — in a military parade in Tehran issued a direct threat to the Jewish state. “If the leaders of the Zionist regime make a mistake then the Islamic Republic will turn Tel Aviv and Haifa into dust,” it said.

The parade — held to mark the 36th anniversary of the September 1980 Iraqi invasion of the Islamic Republic — also featured displays of other weapons systems — including the advanced Russian-made S-300 aerial defense system. http://www.algemeiner.com/2016/09/21/new-iranian-threat-to-israel-we-will-turn-tel-aviv-and-haifa-into-dust/

Netanyahu, Obama at Likely Last Meeting: US – Israel Ties “Unbreakable”

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!” Psalms 133:1 (The Israel Bible™)
By JNS September 22, 2016 , 7:30 am

U.S. President Barack Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met on together on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday in what is likely the last official meeting between the two leaders before Obama leaves office early next year.
“I don’t think people at large understand the breadth and depth of the cooperation, but I know and I want to thank you on behalf of all of the people of Israel,” Netanyahu told Obama at the beginning of their meeting at New York’s Palace Hotel, alluding to the historic 10-year $38 billion military aid package that was signed last week.
“Israel has no bigger friend than America, and America has no bigger friend than Israel,” Netanyahu reiterated during the meeting.
“It is a very difficult and dangerous time in the Middle East, and we want to make sure that Israel has the full capabilities it needs in order to keep the Israeli people safe,” he said.
Obama also began his remarks by touting the special bond between the two countries.

Pope Francis meets with World Jewish Congress
2016-09-27 Vatican Radio

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis met with members of the World Jewish Congress on Monday evening.
An article published on Tuesday by the Vatican newspaper, the 'Osservatore Romano', highlighted how the Holy Father spoke about a series of issues pertaining to inter faith relations and the current migration crisis on the European continent.
“Europe often forgets that it has been enriched by migrants,” – Pope Francis said – “Europe is closing itself up. Europe is lacking creativity. Europe has a falling birth rate, and problems of high unemployment.”

Pope Francis also spoke about migrants integrating into their new surroundings, which he called “important.”
“The people who committed the terrorist attacks in Belgium were not properly integrated,” he said.
Pope Francis also reiterated a good Christian could not be an anti-Semite, and said Christians and Jews must speak out against brutality in the world.

“We need more friendliness and kindness, and we should not be afraid to speak out against brutality,” – the Holy Father said – “We should go on a joint journey together to make the world more secure. We need to speak out for peace.”
The World Jewish Congress includes the heads of Jewish communities in Europe and the Americas, and in light of the upcoming Rosh Hashana holiday, Pope Francis wished the Jewish world a happy new year.

Israeli Furor As Both The Temple Mount And Western Wall Reclassified By UN As Exclusively Muslim

Since capturing disputed east Jerusalem in the 1967 war, Israel insists that the holy sites in the Old City should remain under its sovereignty. The Palestinians, for their part, say that any final status peace agreement with Israel is not possible so long as its government refuses to cede control of sites holy to Muslims
by Geoffrey Grider October 14, 2016
The Israeli government reacted angrily on Thursday to a United Nations body’s resolutions that failed to mention any link between Judaism and its holy sites in Jerusalem.
The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.” Joel 3:16 (KJV)
EDITOR’S NOTE: The word ‘Jerusalem’ occurs 811 times in 764 verses in the KJV. The Bible says that King David, Israel’s greatest king, reigned over Israel from it’s capital city of Jerusalem. Not one time, ever in the entire Bible, do we see any Muslims having anything to do with Jerusalem. From start to finish, Jerusalem is 100% Jewish and belonging to Israel. That the United Nations in 2016 would declare it to be “100% Muslim” is clear evidence of the demonic nature of the UN and UNESCO.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) renewed the resolutions that criticized Israel for what it says are its policies that restrict Muslim access to a site considered holy by both Jews and Muslims in Jerusalem’s Old City.
The site is revered by Jews and Muslims alike, known to Jews as Temple Mount and to Muslims as the al-Aqsa compound or Haram al-Sharif (which is the Arabic translation for ‘Noble Sanctuary’). http://www.nowtheendbegins.com/israeli-furor-temple-mount-western-wall-jerusalem-reclassified-un-exclusively-muslim/

Congress Blasts Obama for Preparing Anti-Israel Offensive

By The Jerusalem Connection | Oct 13, 2016 | By Jenna Lifhits, Weekly Standard -
The Obama administration is manufacturing a crisis with Israel in anticipation of a post-election diplomatic push targeting the Jewish state, and this past week launched a series of broadsides criticizing the Israelis through the media and in press briefings, according to congressional sources and Jewish-American officials who spoke to THE WEEKLY STANDARD.
The White House and State Department lashed out after the Israelis advanced plans to build in areas the administration considers to be off-limits to new Israeli construction, using language that reporters noted is usually reserved for terror attacks.
Asked by journalists why the administration stated that it “strongly condemn[ed]” Israel’s plans to advance construction, a phrase ordinarily used “to denounce acts of terrorism,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest replied that the construction “provoke[s] strong feelings in the administration.” In that briefing, Earnest also suggested that Israel betrayed commitments to Washington, while a State Department official separately said Israel would be “cementing… perpetual occupation” if it built the houses.
The latest controversy revolves around construction that the Israelis say is within the already existing Israeli neighborhood Shilo, but that the administration says constitutes a new settlement. Congressional officials who spoke to TWS said that the administration’s condemnation is a pretext for eroding relations with Israel and potentially for setting up a broader diplomatic offensive.
“They’re launching this weird, aggressive campaign that simply will have no positive outcome,” a senior congressional source told TWS. “It’s not an accident that all of this has been going on as Congress goes into recess [and] as attention is diverted by the election.”
The source said that while the administration has engaged in similar behavior against Israel in the past, this case appeared “far more coordinated and aggressive.”
“The president is in the market for a legacy,” the source continued. “I’m very concerned that he’s going to do something that he considers to be dramatic, just to get his name on the process.”
Another congressional source told TWS that President Obama has been “waiting for an opening” to condemn Israel.
“200 housing units in an existing community that did not expand the boundaries at all? That’s not something that should even make the news in Israel, let alone the U.S.”

Evidence unearthed of Jerusalem’s protective ‘Third Wall’ from Second Temple period

Compelling evidence from the breaching of Jerusalem’s so-called “third wall” – which was said to surround the capital during the Roman destruction of the Temple in 70 CE – may finally help to conclusively prove its existence.
The Antiquities Authority on Thursday said the remnants were first discovered last winter in the capital’s downtown Russian Compound, where the new sprawling campus of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design is being constructed.
During the legally mandated excavation that preceded the beginning of construction, archeologists discovered the remains of a tower jutting from the ancient wall, which could shed light on Jerusalem’s boundaries on the eve of the Roman onslaught led by Titus.

Donald Trump addresses AIPAC, March 21, 2016.

With the help of a prepared speech (written with a healthy dose of input by his son-in-law, the Jewish developer and newspaper owner Jared Kushner, and Ron Dermer, Israel’s ambassador to the U.S.), a pair of teleprompters and talking points pulled from the AIPAC playbook – all a departure from his usual free-verse style – Trump hit a homerun.
“When I become president, the days of treating Israel like a second-class citizen will end on day one,” he said, to applause. “I will meet with Prime Minister Netanyahu immediately. I have known him for many years and we’ll be able to work closely together to help bring stability and peace to Israel and to the entire region.”
He also spoke more harshly, albeit confusingly, about the Iran deal than he had previously, promising first to “dismantle the disastrous deal” and then vowing to “enforce it like you’ve never seen a contract enforced before.” He called U.S. President Barack Obama possibly “the worst thing to ever happen to Israel,” and righted his wrong at the RJC meeting a few months earlier: “We will move the American embassy to the eternal capital of the Jewish people, Jerusalem,” he said.
The performance was enough to at least temporarily quiet the concerns of the Jewish Republican establishment, though Trump failed to subsequently capture the Jewish vote in the New York primary a few weeks later, even as he won the state overall.
And despite his careful concessions to pro-Israel rhetoric at AIPAC, he curiously and perhaps somewhat defiantly hasn’t stopped championing his neutrality when it comes to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. http://www.haaretz.com/world-news/u-s-election-2016/1.720213

Why Donald Trump Could Be the Most Pro-Israel President in a Generation

By Jason Howerton | November 17, 2016 | There is still plenty of uncertainty surrounding what exactly a Trump administration will look like, but one thing is not up for debate: Donald Trump could be the most pro-Israel commander in chief in modern history.
Jewish state has long held a “special relationship” with the United States, however that relationship has been put under immense strain by the Obama administration's controversial policies toward Israel. The outgoing administration has regularly clashed with the leaders of the Jewish State, demanding territorial concessions to the Hamas-led Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, bluntly snubbing Netanyahu in the White House, brokering the deeply unpopular Iran Nuclear Deal and refusing to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem, a huge victory for the Palestinian State which lays claim to the Holy City. The policies of the Obama administration have led scholars to ask if Israel-US relations have reached a new low?
Assuming the Trump Administration intends to follow through on his campaign rhetoric toward the Jewish State, the President-elect has positioned himself to reverse the Obama chilling effect and become perhaps the most staunchly pro-Israel President in the history of the White House.
Here are a few concrete reasons why:

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is clearly a fan of the Donald. President-elect will relocate embassy from Tel Aviv: 'He's a man who keeps his word'

Trump adviser: He doesn’t see settlements as peace obstacle
Jason Greenblatt says president-elect won’t force Israel, Palestinians to negotiate; will move US embassy to Jerusalem
By Stuart Winer November 10, 2016 - President-elect Donald Trump’s top adviser on Israel said Thursday that the incoming US leader doesn’t see Jewish settlements in the West Bank as obstacle to peace with the Palestinians, and predicted Trump would keep his campaign promise to move the US embassy to Jerusalem — essentially recognizing the holy city as Israel’s capital.
Successive US administrations have maintained that Israeli settlements in the West Bank are illegal and their presence and continued expansion are major stumbling blocks in the path to reaching a peace agreement.
But Trump, Jason Greenblatt told Army Radio, believes Israelis and Palestinians should resolve their differences without the world imposing a peace plan on them.
“Mr. Trump does not view the settlements as an obstacle to peace. I think he would show Gaza as proof of that,” Greenblatt said, referring to Israel’s 2005 unilateral withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, which included the removal of all Jewish settlements from the coastal enclave.

Fatah Unanimously Re-Elects Mahmoud Abbas as Party Leader

November 29, 2016 - avatarby - JNS.org - Palestinian political party Fatah unanimously re-elected Mahmoud Abbas as its leader at the opening this week of its first leadership congress in more than seven years. The re-election of the 81-year-old Abbas, who also serves as president of the Palestinian Authority, comes despite growing unpopularity and internal dissent within Palestinian society. Abbas has been increasingly challenged by a younger generation of Palestinian leaders, including exiled rival Mohammad Dahlan, who currently resides in the United Arab Emirates.
Later this week, members of Fatah’s parliament and central committee will hold elections to determine the future of the party, which largely dominates Palestinian society in the West Bank.

Pope Francis: support for UNESCO initiative

2016-11-30 Vatican Radio - (Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on Wednesday gave his support to an international conference on the protection of the cultural heritage in conflict zones, which is taking place in Abu Dhabi on 2-3 December. The Safeguarding Endangered Cultural Heritage Conference is being organized by France and the United Arab Emirates under the auspices of UNESCO, the United Nations cultural agency. The conference will involve representatives from more than 40 countries, as well as public and private institutions involved in heritage conversation.
Pope Francis said the theme is “unfortunately starkly current.” “In the conviction that the protection of cultural treasures constitutes an essential dimension in the defense of what it is to be human, I hope that this event marks a new step in the process of the implementation of human rights,” the Holy Father said. http://www.news.va/en/news/pope-francis-support-for-unesco-initiative

General Assembly Adopted six Resolutions on question of Palestine, Situation in Middle East

Seventy-first Session, 50th Meeting (AM) - GA/11861 30 November 2016
Urging Concerted Action to Revive Peace Talks, General Assembly Adopts Six Resolutions on Question of Palestine, Situation in Middle East
The General Assembly today adopted six resolutions on Palestinian and Middle East issues, ranging from Jerusalem to the United Nations special information programme on the question of Palestine. The Assembly adopted a resolution on the peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine (document A/71/L.21) by a recorded vote of 153 in favour to 7 against (Canada, Federated States of Micronesia, Israel, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, United States), with 7 abstentions (Australia, Cameroon, Honduras, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Tonga, Vanuatu). By the terms of the resolution, the Assembly called for the intensification of efforts by the parties, including through negotiations, with the support of the international community, towards the conclusion of a final peace settlement.
The Assembly also adopted a resolution on Jerusalem (document A/71/L.22) by a recorded vote of 149 in favour to 7 against (Canada, Federated States of Micronesia, Israel, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, United States), with 8 abstentions (Australia, Cameroon, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Vanuatu). By its terms, the Assembly reiterated its determination that any actions taken by Israel, the occupying Power, to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration on the Holy City of Jerusalem were illegal and therefore null and void and had no validity whatsoever, and called upon Israel to immediately cease all such illegal and unilateral measures. The Assembly also stressed that a comprehensive, just and lasting solution to the question of the City of Jerusalem should take into account the legitimate concerns of both the Palestinian and Israeli sides.
By the terms of a resolution on the Syrian Golan (document A/71/L.8), the Assembly demanded that Israel withdraw from all the occupied territory to the line of 4 June 1967 and called on all parties concerned to exert the necessary efforts to ensure the resumption of the peace process. That resolution received 103 in favour to 6 against (Canada, Federated States of Micronesia, Israel, Marshall Islands, Palau, United States), with 56 abstentions.
In adopting a resolution on the Special Information Programme on the Question of Palestine of the Department of Public Information of the Secretariat (document A/71/L.20), the Assembly renewed the Department’s mandate. It also requested the Department to disseminate information on all activities relating to the question of Palestine and peace efforts and to organize and promote fact-finding news missions for journalists to the Occupied Palestinian Territories, including East Jerusalem, and Israel. That text garnered 153 votes in favour to 7 against (Australia, Canada, Federated States of Micronesia, Israel, Marshall Islands, Palau, United States), with 7 abstentions (Cameroon, Honduras, Nauru, Paraguay, Togo, Tonga, Vanuatu).
The Assembly also adopted a resolution on the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (A/71/L.18), as orally revised, by a recorded vote of 100 in favour to 9 against (Australia, Canada, Federated States of Micronesia, Guatemala, Israel, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, United States), with 55 abstentions, and a resolution on the Division for Palestinian Rights of the Secretariat (document A/71/L.19), with 98 in favour to 9 against (Australia, Canada, Federated States of Micronesia, Guatemala, Israel, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Palau, United States), with 57 abstentions. Outgoing US secretary of state excoriates Netanyahu government, slams Naftali Bennett for ‘disturbing’ remarks on two-state solution

By REBECCA SHIMONI STOIL - December 4, 2016
Kerry’s parting conclusion on peace deadlock: It’s Netanyahu’s fault. Between the lines, outgoing top US diplomat suggests Israeli PM failed to deliver leadership necessary for progress. US Secretary of State John Kerry arrives to the Palestinian Authority headquarters in the West Bank city of Ramallah for meetings with Palestinian officials on November 24, 2015. (AFP / ABBAS MOMANI)
WASHINGTON: It was an introspective US Secretary of State John Kerry who came to the closing session of the final Saban Forum of the Obama administration on Sunday. For four years as secretary of state, the Massachusetts politician had made the short trek to the Willard Intercontinental Hotel in early December, updating an audience that leaned Democratic "and pro-Israel" about the hottest issues on the burner, whether they were peace talks or Iran nuclear negotiations. Introspective Kerry knew that this was his last time to explain before Washington's think-tank elite why on his watch, the United States had once again failed to untangle the Gordian knot of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He wore reading glasses, sat rather than stood, and cited facts, figures and maps from a thick binder. And he delivered a thesis not explicitly, but repeatedly: The United States had failed in its mission because Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was unwilling to demonstrate the kind of leadership shown by his predecessors. Kerry was at pains to stress his engagement with the prime minister. He noted that he had spoken to Netanyahu over 375 times in the past four years for a total of 130 hours. He had traveled to Israel over 40 times, and met with the premier in a number of other countries as well, he noted. But to no avail.
The failure to reach a solution "or even to slow the growth of the settlements Kerry repeatedly excoriated as "an obstacle to peace" was, Kerry said, "a function of leadership." Kerry listed steps toward peace taken by Netanyahu's predecessors, Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Rabin, Ehud Barak and Ehud Olmert. Other than Yitzhak Shamir, under whose administration the Madrid Conference established the precedent for bilateral talks and former president Shimon Peres, who he cited later, there was only one name missing from the list "Netanyahu's.
Kerry went to lengths to describe the Obama administration's willingness to go to bat for Israel, whether defending it at the United Nations or providing it with unprecedented levels of defense aid. He described Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas as a leader "committed to non-violence," and detailed US General John Allen's near-forgotten attempts to negotiate Israeli security presence in the Jordan Valley. But time and time again in his talk, Kerry alluded to a lack of leadership, an inability or unwillingness to surmount the risks of coalition politics for a greater end. http://www.timesofisrael.com/

At Fatah Congress, Rajoub -- and Abbas -- walk away with big wins

The Palestinian news agencies on Sunday published the first results in the Fatah Central Committee elections for key positions in the political party.
December 5, 2016 Times of Israel - Coming in first place was Marwan Barghouti, held in Israeli prison for murder after orchestrating deadly terror attacks during the Second Intifada, followed by Jibril Rajoub, the head of the Palestinian Football Association (PFA). For months, Rajoub has been seen as the most popular personality in Fatah, after Bargouhti, of course, and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-BTF_MPU_2'); });
Next on the list are Mahmud Eshtawi, Hussein Eshtawi and Muhammed Al-Alul — all of whom are allies of Rajoub.
And that is likely to be the most significant outcome of these elections within the framework of the seventh Fatah Congress – Rajoub’s camp is strengthening and he is the leading candidate for the position of general-secretary of the top decision-making Central Committee, which positions him as number two in the party and a possible successor to Abbas.
Rajoub’s biggest opponent in these elections, Tawfik Tirawi, was also chosen for the Central Committee, but few of his supporters made it on the list. Only Yasser Arafat’s nephew Nasser al-Kidwa — also considered a possible successor — made the cut, according to reports. http://www.timesofisrael.com/

UN General Assembly supports resolution ignoring Jewish ties to Temple Mount

UNESCO votes: No connection between Temple Mount and Judaism - UN in New York votes on ignoring Jewish ties to Temple Mount
The UN General Assembly overwhelming voted to support a resolution that used solely Muslim language to describe the Temple Mount.
Out of the United Nation’s 193 member states, 147 voted in favor, seven voted against and eight abstained.
The Jerusalem resolution was one of six resolutions condemning Israel and supporting the Palestinians that the General Assembly approved on Wednesday, as part of its special annual session for the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, which began on Tuesday. All the European member states present in the room voted in favor of the resolution – countries such as France, Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom. (Israeli Envoy to UNESCO throws Jerusalem resolution into the trash)
The states that opposed the Jerusalem resolution were the United States, Canada, Israel, the Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Naura and Palu.
Those that abstained were Australia, Guatemala, Panama, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay and Vanuatu.
The Jerusalem resolution, numbered A/71/l.22, addresses the situation in Jerusalem and its holy sites and states that “any actions taken by Israel, the occupying power, to impose its laws, jurisdiction and administration on the Holy City of Jerusalem are illegal and therefore null and void and have no validity whatsoever, and calls upon Israel to immediately cease all such illegal and unilateral measures.”
The text calls on Israel to have “respect for the historic status quo at the holy places of Jerusalem” and “urges all sides to work immediately and cooperatively to defuse tensions and halt all provocations, incitement and violence at the holy sites in the city.”
The resolutions were introduced by a group of mostly Arab countries, including Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq and Lebanon, and the Palestinian Authority, but also some Asian countries, such as Indonesia and Lao People’s Democratic Republic, as well as a few African countries.
Resolutions A/71/l.18 and A/71/l.19, the first in the series, pledge respectively to support the UN’s Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People in its efforts to end the Israeli “occupation,” and extend member state’s cooperation with and support to the division for Palestinian Rights of the UN Secretariat.

Artist behind Golden Netanyahu statue says work was 'test of free speech'

By i24news - Published: 12/06/2016 - Natalie Boehler/ i24news - December 6, 2016 - A 4.5 meter tall statue of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu mysteriously appeared in Tel Aviv's Rabin Square on December 6, 2016. A 4.5 meter tall gilded statue of Israeli PM Netanyahu appeared in Tel Aviv's Rabin Square Tuesday morning "I deal with freedom and freedom of speech," Israeli artist Itay Zalait told i24news on Tuesday, shortly after the Tel Aviv municipality toppled a four and a half meter tall gilded statue of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Zalait had erected earlier in the day.
"I wanted to test is it possible in Israel in 2016 to say what I want to say and find out if I'm going to be sent to jail or it I could get away with it."
Crowds gathered around the gold effigy, taking selfies and gawking at the towering figure for hours after it was erected. When city officials came to pull it down, video shared on social media showed people gathering excitedly as it was toppled with some laying next to take more photos.
The statue evoked a wide range of reactions from amusement to disgust. Reut, a 30-year-old resident of Tel Aviv told i24news that she decided to check the statue out for herself after seeing it on the news. Its amazing, she notes, "but not in a good way."

Is a Scary Prophecy Written in 1907 About Obama Coming True 5 Days Before Trump Inauguration?

CLICK on icon
C. Ervana - Published on Jan 4, 2017
In 1907, a book was published called "Lord of the World." This book is about the a U.S. Senator named Julian Felsenburgh, who quickly ascends to become "President of the World." Felsenburgh has unusual parallels with Obama including that they are both U.S. Senators, both charismatic speakers, and both have visited Paris for major conventions. Felsenburgh visited Paris and presided over a peace treaty as Europe spiraled into chaos. There was rioting in the streets, people dying, and protests, yet Felsenburgh quells all of it with his promise of peace. Last year, a major convention was organized surrounding the hoax known as climate change. This was nothing more than a reorganization of the world toward a new order. It was not about the climate.
Now, Obama appears to be pulling the strings behind a push for peace among Israel and Palestine. Firstly, he instructed Samantha Power at the U.N. to abstain from a vote condemning Israel for building settlements. Secondly, he orchestrates a Paris convention involving 70 countries gathering together to discuss peace in the Holy Land and a two-state solution. The catch is that neither Israel nor Palestine will be at the meeting. They will be completely removed from direct conversation with the 70 countries. Perhaps a two-state solution will be accomplished without Israel of Palestine present.
The move to have a major convention about solving one of the world's greatest land conflicts just five days before a president leaves office is unprecedented. Why Obama would decide to do such a thing is not known. Nonetheless, he will send Kerry, likely Samantha Power, and an entire American delegation to Paris. Julian Felsenburgh also did the same thing when he signed a peace treaty.
In the novel, Lord of the World, we also meet another character named Father Francis, a Roman Catholic who leaves the church and joins Felsenburgh's new world religion. This religion is a combination of mother goddess worship and Freemasonry. Felsenburgh is, himself, a 33 year old Freemason who hates organized religion, especially Christianity. After he takes power, he orders Christians to be killed if they do not renounce their faith.
We should be questioning if a 1907 prophecy is coming to life right now. Several people, including a former pontiff, have suggested that "Lord of the World" is a prophecy in the form of a narrative. Pope Benedict 16 called the novel prophetic, while Pope Francis encouraged people two read it. He stated that the book portrayed the transition of the world toward the "globalization of hegemonic uniformity." He neglects to tell the audience that this uniformity is achieved through great violence, death, and destruction carried out by the Antichrist, Julian Felsenburgh.

Paris Peace Summit to push for two-state solution: report

By i24news - Published: 01/09/2017 - 09:16pm, updated: 09:21pm
Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas, seen January 6, 2017, said, "Any statement or position that disrupts or changes the status of Jerusalem is a red line which we will not accept"
Summary statement also demands that Netanyahu, Abbas renounce officials opposed to the solution
The participants in the upcoming Paris peace summit will urge Israel and the Palestinian Authority to push for the so-called two-state solution based on 1967 borders, Haaretz reported Monday citing the event's summary statement a copy of which it managed to obtain.
Some 70 countries are expected to attend the conference in Paris, planned for January 15, organized by French President François Hollande. While the Palestinians welcomed this initiative, the Israeli government has always been firmly opposed, saying it will not attend and arguing that only direct bilateral negotiations can be successful. Both Jerusalem and Ramallah will be required "to independently demonstrate, through policies and actions, a genuine commitment to the two-state solution and refrain from unilateral steps that prejudge the outcome of final-status negotiations, in order to rebuild trust and create a path back to meaningful direct negotiations,” the statement cited by Haaretz read.
Moreover, it calls on both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to renounce those in their governments who oppose the two-state solution which would see the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.
US-brokered peace talks collapsed in April 2014 and the situation has since deteriorated, with the prospects of fresh dialogue appearing increasingly remote.

Vatican signs treaty with 'State of Palestine,' calls for two-state solution

by Joshua J. McElwee | Jun. 26, 2015 - Vatican City -- The Vatican on Friday signed a comprehensive agreement formally recognizing the "State of Palestine" following 15 years of negotiations on a bilateral accord that is said to provide juridical recognition for Catholic churches and call for a two-state solution with Israel on the basis of their borders in 1967.
Announcement of the agreement comes about a month after the Vatican had said the agreement was in its final stages, which, in turn, led to the Israeli foreign ministry expressing disappointment over the move.
The text of the accord is not yet available. Archbishop Paul Gallagher, the Vatican prelate who serves essentially as the pope's foreign minister, said in a statement that it was his hope that the agreement "may in some way be a stimulus to bringing a definitive end to the long-standing Israeli-Palestinian conflict."
"I also hope that the much desired two-state solution may become a reality as soon as possible," said Gallagher, the secretary for the relations with states at the Vatican's Secretariat of State.
Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki called the agreement "historic" and said "it would not have been possible" without both Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Pope Francis.

Catholic Conferences Provide a Voice for the Church at State Capitols

Nation | February 9, 2017 - Catholic Conferences Provide a Voice for the Church at State Capitols
As state legislatures get to work across the country, local Catholic conferences add faith-filled voice to the conversation and equip laity for faithful citizenship. Jonathan Liedl
It’s not uncommon in statehouses across the country for a priest or a bishop to offer a blessing at the beginning of the legislative session. But many Catholics might be surprised to learn that the Church’s presence in the halls of local governance continues well after the session has been gaveled in.
In state capitols from Sacramento to St. Paul, Tallahassee to Topeka, the Catholic Church is advocating for policies in line with a consistent ethic of life through the work of state Catholic conferences.
“The Catholic Church and Catholic conferences boldly and bravely enter the fray of politics with compassion, respect and, most importantly, the truth,” said Jenny Kraska, executive director of the Colorado Catholic Conference.
The roles a Catholic conference plays can vary slightly by state, with some conferences taking on added duties, such as administration of diocesan employee benefits. At the heart of it, though, a state Catholic conference serves as the official public-policy voice of the state’s bishops, coordinating the public-policy efforts of several dioceses.
“When we speak, we do so on behalf of our state’s bishops, and it is their positions on legislation that we convey,” explained Jeff Caruso, executive director of the Virginia Catholic Conference.
Like a state-version of the more well-known U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the bishops of a state comprise the conference and are served by staff. Staff sizes range from one to double digits and can include lobbyists, communications specialists and outreach coordinators.
Not all states have Catholic conferences, but Rick Barnes, the executive director of the New York State Catholic Conference and president of the National Association of State Catholic Conference Directors (NASCCD), says the number is growing. Forty-three states are now represented in NASCCD, including six single-diocese states that have a diocesan public-policy office in lieu of a state conference. “More bishops in states that didn’t have them have seen the value of it,” Barnes explained. http://www.ncregister.com/daily-news/the-churchs-voice-at-the-capitol

[Ednote: i just heard that India and China are in the lead of pollution. Pope Francis wants to enforce the "Sunday Law" including taxation which is part of the Noahide Laws that were agreed to by former President Reagan, Bush, & Obama.]

Climate Change Campaign - Slow Sunday: The Simple Solution to Global Warming

Satish Kumar - Make Sunday a low-carbon day. 17 September 2009 EDT - The 10:10 movement supported by the Guardian is a wonderful way to empower ordinary people to participate in the great movement of mitigating global warming. We cannot wait until governments are enlightened enough to legislate and cap the carbon emissions. Matters are urgent. We have to act now, without any delay. The power of public opinion and citizen action will have a strong impact on the climate conference taking place in Copenhagen.
One thing we can easily do to achieve this goal: we can declare Sunday to be a fossil fuel-free day or a low-carbon day or at least an energy-saving day. We can start this week, this month or in 2010. We can start individually and collectively. The long journey to cut carbon dioxide emissions can start in the here and now.
Not long ago Sunday used to be a day of rest, a day of spiritual renewal, a day for families to come together, but we have changed Sunday from a day of rest to a day of shopping, flying and driving. However, in the context of excessive carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere, which are bringing catastrophic upheavals, we can and should restore Sunday to a day for Gaia, a day for the Earth. There will be no great hardship in cutting down all non-essential and non-urgent use of fossil fuels for one day a week. We can easily close supermarkets, department stores and petrol stations. We can reduce our mobility to the bare essentials and without harming the economy in any way.

Climate: Pope Appeals to Local Churches to Mobilize

He Encourages the Global Catholic Climate Movement - February 1, 2017 - Anne Kurian - General Audience [NOTICE THE SNAKE DESIGN OF THE CEILING]
On February 1, 2017, the Pope appealed to local Churches to mobilize for the protection of the planet. In the course of the General Audience in the Vatican’s Paul VI Hall, he greeted the delegation of the Global Catholic Climate Movement (GCCM). The objective of the Movement is, notably, to sensitize Catholics through its networks, to promote ecological conversion “towards a low carbon society” and to require leaders to “engage in an ambitious climatic action.” He thanked them for their “engagement in protecting our common home, in these times of grave socio-environmental crisis.”
“I encourage you to continue to weave networks so that the local Churches will respond with determination to the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor,” continued the Pontiff. In the crowd, the GCCM delegation waved banners greeting Pope Francis’ encyclical on integral ecology: “Cheers forLaudato Si’.”

Palestinians Fear Being Sidelined by Trump White House

By Karin Laub and Mohammed Daraghmeh - AP - ·RAMALLAH, West Bank — February 8, 2017 - Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas, who spent hundreds of hours on the phone and in meetings with U.S. presidents and secretaries of state in the past 12 years, has tried unsuccessfully to reach out to President Donald Trump. Abbas and his aides are alarmed by the possibility of being sidelined at a time when the administration is embracing Israel's prime minister who heads to the White House next week. Here's a look at what's at stake for Abbas and Palestinian hopes for statehood.
ARE THE PALESTINIANS REALLY BEING IGNORED? In December, the Trump transition team refused to meet with Palestinian officials visiting Washington, putting them off until after the Jan. 20 inauguration, according to senior Abbas aide Saeb Erekat, the main point man for official contacts with the United States. Other advisers say Abbas tried to arrange a phone call with Trump after the November election and again after the inauguration, but received no response to his requests. The White House did not respond to a January letter in which Abbas expressed concerns about possibly moving the U.S. Embassy in Israel to contested Jerusalem.
Erekat, whose contacts are now limited to the U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem, has been quoted as saying that "we have sent them letters, written messages; they don't even bother to respond to us." In contrast, Trump spoke twice with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by phone, on Nov. 9 and Jan. 22, and will receive him at the White House on Feb. 15.
WHAT HAS THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION SAID?
The White House earlier this week denied an Israeli newspaper report, based on a secondhand quote from a Trump aide, that the administration does not intend to have a relationship with the Palestinian Authority, Abbas' self-rule government, at this point. However, the statement did not say what kind of relationship the White House envisions with the Palestinians.

HAS RABBI SCHNEERSON BEEN RESURRECTED? WILD RUMORS SPARK END-TIME FRENZY

August 6, 2017 - A Jewish teacher transforms the society in which he lives. After he dies, there are rumors he will be raised from the dead. Sure enough, his followers soon claim he is appearing and maintain there are miracles being performed in his name. And his return is supposed to begin a whole new era for the Jewish people.
Sound familiar? It’s not the story you think. Rabbi Menachem Schneerson, a leader in the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, died in 1994. But some of his followers claimed he was the Messiah and would eventually return from the dead. Now, Zev Porat, a Messianic Jewish Rabbi who preaches the Gospel, claims just such a movement is underway in his homeland of Israel.
Porat explained the story in a recent appearance on “Freedom Friday” with Carl Gallups, author of the end times examination “When The Lion Roars” and ‘The Rabbi Who Found Messiah,” an examination of the revival of Messianic Judaism in Israel. Porat explained it is this very revival of belief in Jesus Christ as the Jewish Messiah which may be inspiring the startling claims about the late Rabbi Schneerson.
“Rabbi Schneerson is one of the leaders of the Lubavitcher organization in New York and of course also in Israel,” Porat explained to Gallups. “He passed away in 1994… and right now we’re in the middle of 2017 and his followers are saying that he has resurrected and that he’s walking around somewhere right now in the world and that he’s going to appear to the people, and he’s doing a lot of miracles right now. This is really amazing. And I’ll tell you right now, Carl, it’s because they for years have been saying that Yeshua cannot be God, cannot be the Messiah because it is impossible God would manifest Himself as a man. And now, they’re doing the same thing. They’re not saying Schneerson is God but they’re glorifying him in the same way, meaning they’re actually using the words they were once using against us [Messianic Jews].” Read more at http://www.wnd.com/2017/08/has-famous-rabbi-been-resurrected-from-dead/

Trump reassures Palestinians embassy not moving to Jerusalem

By The Jerusalem Connection | Feb 13, 2017 | Jordan |
By Yasser Okbi— Donald Trump has responded to the Jordanian king’s request that the United States refrain from moving the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, Arab media reported on Saturday. The Palestinian daily Al-Quds reported that the Trump administration transferred a message to the Palestinian Authority that the embassy would not be moving to Jerusalem. According to the report, top security officials in the Trump administration also spoke with the head of the Palestinian General Intelligence Service, Majid Faraj, to send “reassuring messages” on settlements. But in an interview with the Hebrew daily Israel Hayom, Trump said he had not yet made a decision on whether or not to relocate the embassy.
“I am thinking about the embassy, I am studying the embassy [issue], and we will see what happens. The embassy is not an easy decision. It has obviously been out there for many, many years, and nobody has wanted to make that decision. I’m thinking about it very seriously, and we will see what happens,” Trump told the paper. On Wednesday, the foreign ministers of Jordan and Egypt discussed Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem during a meeting in the Jordanian capital Amman.
Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman al-Safadi said that Israeli settlements and other issues relating to the conflict were addressed during Jordanian King Abdullah’s recent meetings with the new US administration.
During the visit, Abdullah raised concerns about Trump’s pledge to relocate the American Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Trump and Netanyahu — a match made in heaven?

by The Jerusalem Connection | Nov 12, 2016 | 2016 |
BY RAPHAEL AHREN, JPOST— On January 20, 2017, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will finally have a Republican president sitting in the White House.
Netanyahu has often been called a Republican himself, and many observers of US-Israel relations believe he is eagerly awaiting Inauguration Day, when for the first time in his 10 years at the helm of the Jewish state there will not be a Democratic president of the US.
On the face of it, Donald Trump’s victory seems to be a dream come true for the Israeli prime minister. The president-elect has repeatedly vowed to unconditionally back the Jewish state in any possible way: he promised not to try to force a solution on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; slammed the Iranian nuclear deal; pledged to move the US embassy to Jerusalem and removed the two-state solution from the Republican party platform.
Netanyahu also knows and appreciates the vice-president-elect, Mike Pence, who has a long record of support for Israel.
Some of the names rumored to be part of Trump’s future cabinet will be music to Netanyahu’s ears. Newt Gingrich and John Bolton, for instance, are thought to have a good chance of becoming the next secretary of state, and Rudy Giuliani expects to be appointed attorney-general. Many others in Trump’s inner circle have long records of outspoken and unconditional support for the Jewish state and Netanyahu’s policies.
On the other hand, Netanyahu knows that Trump is unpredictable and might change his Middle East policies on a whim. The prime minister surely hasn’t forgotten that Trump said he wants to remain “neutral” on the Israeli-Palestinian issue or that he contemplated asking Israel to repay the billions in military aid it received from the US.
In December, Netanyahu issued a statement rejecting Trump’s proposed ban on Muslims, stressing that “Israel respects all religions and strictly guarantees the rights of all its citizens.”

Chief Rabbi Blesses Netanyahu Ahead of Meeting With Trump

by The Jerusalem Connection | Feb 13, 2017 | By Israel Today— Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday departed for his fateful first meeting with Donald Trump since becoming the 45th president of the United States. But before Netanyahu left, Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef blessed him and prayed for the meeting.
“May the Holy One, Blessed be He, be with your words. You are the representative of the entire Jewish nation, and there is no doubt God will aid you,” said Yosef.
A day earlier, Netanyahu presided over a fiery cabinet meeting where some ministers put heavy pressure on him to take advantage of President Trump’s sympathy to renounce the two-state solution and the so-called “Oslo Accords.”
Netanyahu tried to chill expectations, insisting that even with a president like Trump, there would be limitations to what Israel could do.
Even so, if the meeting ends with either Netanyahu or Trump committing to a Palestinian state, the prime minister will be in for a political firestorm when he gets home.

Glick to submit bill annexing Jerusalem-area settlements

by The Jerusalem Connection | February 13, 2017 | Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria
By Tovah Lazaroff, Jerusalem Post — MK Yehudah Glick (Likud) plans to submit to the Knesset this week a private member’s bill to annex the settlements around Jerusalem.
It follows on the heels of a similar bill to annex the West Bank settlement of Ma’aleh Adumim, which already has been submitted but not approved for government support by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation.
Glick’s bill would include Ma’aleh Adumim, as well as the settlement of Givat Ze’ev, Geva Binyamin (Adam), Psagot, Ma’aleh Michmash and the Gush Etzion bloc.
It would cover at least one third of the 386,000 settlers in Judea and Samaria, based on 2015 data from the Central Bureau of Statistics.
Glick’s spokesman said the bill has the support of Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely and Transportation Minister Israel Katz, both of the Likud.
The legislation is part of a flurry of annexation initiatives settlers and right-wing politicians have promoted since US President Donald Trump was sworn into office on January 20.
Glick said placing these communities within sovereign Israel would strengthen Jerusalem and remove the idea of a Palestinian state from the agenda.
He noted that Israel would soon mark the 50th anniversary of the Six Day War, in which Judea and Samaria were liberated, saying it also should be “the year of sovereignty.”
It is not enough to settle for applying sovereignty to Ma’aleh Adumim, he added.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has discouraged annexation attempts, preferring a more moderate path forward in which the US would support construction within the settlement blocs.

Netanyahu opposes Palestinian state, Israel Cabinet member says

by The Jerusalem Connection | Feb 13, 2017 | Judea and Samaria, Peace Process |
By Reuters— Netanyahu opposes a Palestinian state, a senior Israeli cabinet member said on Monday, but left it unclear whether the prime minister would say that publicly in talks with US President Donald Trump in Washington this week. Netanyahu has never explicitly abandoned his conditional support for a future Palestine, and his spokesman did not respond immediately to a request to comment on Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan’s remarks.
Erdan belongs to Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party, whose leading members have often espoused a harder line than the prime minister himself.
“I think all members of the security cabinet, and foremost the prime minister, oppose a Palestinian state,” Erdan told Army Radio after the forum met on Sunday on the eve of Netanyahu’s departure for Washington for talks with Trump on Wednesday.
“No one thinks in the next few years that a Palestinian state is something that, God forbid, might or should happen,” he said in the interview.
But asked if Netanyahu would voice opposition to statehood on camera when he meets Trump, Erdan said: “The prime minister has to weigh things according to what he feels in the meeting and the positions he encounters there. No one knows what the positions of the president and his staff are.”
Palestinians seek to establish a state in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip with east Jerusalem as its capital. Israel captured those areas in a 1967 war and pulled its troops and settlers out of Gaza in 2005.
Citing Israeli settlement activity, Palestinian leaders and the former US administration of Barack Obama have questioned Netanyahu’s commitment, which he first made in a 2009 policy speech, to the so-called two-state solution to decades of conflict.
“It is not only their statements – what the government of the extreme right in Israel does on the ground prevents any chance of the establishment of a Palestinian state,” Wasel Abu Youssef, an official of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said of Erdan’s comments.

Netanyahu to meet Trump amid ‘monumental’ shift in US ties

JOYCE KARAM | Special to Arab News | Published — Tuesday 14 February 2017
WASHINGTON: After eight years of hand-wringing and not-so-subtle backstabbing between former US President Barack Obama and Benjamin Netanyahu, a “monumental” shift in language and substance awaits the Israeli prime minister as he arrives in Washington to meet Obama’s successor Donald Trump.
Netanyahu’s visit on Wednesday will mark the first official meeting that Trump will hold with a Middle Eastern leader in the Oval Office since his inauguration on Jan. 20.
Netanyahu is also scheduled to meet Vice President Mike Pence, and have dinner with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Tuesday. He will also meet with House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.
The change in optics will be accompanied by a shift in the discussions, according to experts, where Iran’s regional role and its nuclear program will likely dominate the meetings, followed by exploring ideas to jumpstart the peace process.
“The difference from the Obama administration is monumental,” said David Shor, a foreign policy expert based in New York. The strained relations between Obama and Netanyahu were no secret over the last eight years; Netanyahu dismissed the administration’s calls for a settlement freeze, rebuffed its Iran policies and went behind the White House’s back in addressing the Republican-majority Congress in 2015.
Key to the differences during the Obama days was “the enormous pressure (the administration put) on Israel to make concessions, while basically giving Tehran a free hand in the region,” Shor said.
And in that alone, a sea change is expected from the Trump Cabinet. Upping “the pressure on Iran — especially regionally, with a clear upgrading and enhancing of the US-Israel alliance” is expected, and “Israel surely hopes that Iran will once again be the central focus of American foreign policy in the Middle East,” the expert added.

Netanyahu Surrenders, to Tell Trump he Supports a Palestinian State

By TOVAH LAZAROFF,GIL HOFFMAN - February 12, 2017 - PM Netanyahu, who departs for Washington today, tells ministers that the new US president won’t give Israel free rein. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will not retract his support for the creation of a Palestinian state when he meets with US President Donald Trump in Washington on Wednesday, Netanyahu made clear in Sunday’s security cabinet meeting.
When Bayit Yehudi ministers Naftali Bennett and Ayelet Shaked called on Netanyahu to speak out against the creation of a Palestinian state, Netanyahu told them of a conversation with Trump in which the president told him he thinks he can make peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
Hours earlier, Netanyahu said that Trump will not give Israel free rein to do what it wants.
“Even after eight years of complex navigation in the tenure of [former US president Barack] Obama, we still need to continue to act wisely with the Trump administration,” Netanyahu told the ministers in his party, before the weekly cabinet meeting. “While it is a more comfortable administration [to work with], there will still be restrictions.”
Netanyahu has publicly accepted the principle of a two-state solution to the Israeli- Palestinian conflict since his public address on the matter at Bar-Ilan University upon entering office in 2009.
But his coalition’s right flank, the Bayit Yehudi party, as well as members of his own Likud party, have pressured him to back away from that position, particularly given that support for a Palestinian state is not part of the US Republican Party’s platform.
National Infrastructure, Energy and Water Minister Yuval Steinitz (Likud) warned that if Netanyahu were to disavow the Bar-Ilan speech, it would harm Israel internationally.
But the voices of caution were drowned out on Sunday by right-wing politicians who also called on Netanyahu to annex Area C of the West Bank.
Speaking at a sovereignty conference in Jerusalem, sponsored by the organization Women in Green, Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely (Likud) said she had told Netanyahu already last week that “your political base requires sovereignty.”
Environment and Jerusalem Heritage Minister Ze’ev Elkin, also of the Likud, said, “There is no doubt that the conversation with regard to Israeli sovereignty over the West Bank has become a significant component of the political discourse, and that is undoubtedly a great achievement.”
Samaria Regional Council head Yossi Dagan said that the Israeli position Netanyahu presents to Trump with regard to Palestinian statehood and sovereignty would impact the Trump administration’s stance on the matter.
“It won’t be more Zionist than Netanyahu,” Dagan said as he urged Netanyahu to stand strong.
Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee told the conference in a video message that the Trump administration marked a “new day of you knowing that your friends are with you. I wish upon you the courage to be bold and to do that which is necessary to secure your homeland. This is not land that you occupy. This is land that you own, and you have a right to live there.”
Since taking office, Trump has not put forward a position with regard to a Palestinian state.
But he has spoken about his desire to be the one to make a deal to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The White House said his administration does not believe settlements are a stumbling block to peace. Trump has not condemned Israeli settlement activity, but he has said that it is not helpful.
The right-wing has presumed that Netanyahu hopes to come to an agreement with Trump, in which the peace process with the Palestinians would move forward with an understanding that Israel can build in the settlement blocs but would freeze the isolated settlements.
They feel that this is the moment to come up with alternative solutions to the idea of two states and to speak of imposing Israeli sovereignty, in short, to annex Area C of the West Bank.
Prior to the cabinet’s weekly meeting, Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked (Bayit Yehudi) said, “The Republican Party has taken the idea of a Palestinian state out of its platform. There is no reason for a right-wing Israeli government to be more left than the Republican Party.” She called on Netanyahu to present Trump with alternatives to a Palestinian state.
In his opening remarks to the cabinet before its closed-door session, Netanyahu spoke of his meeting with Trump, in which it is expected that three primary topics will be addressed: Iran, Syria and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Trump Shows New Support for Abandoning Two-State Solution in Meeting with Netanyahu

By Emily Love | February 15, 2017 - President Donald Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday to hold a joint press conference at the White House regarding the future of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. The upshot of which is neither leader committed explicitly to back a future independent Palestine, a longstanding bedrock of US policy.
https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump
Trump suggested to Netanyahu that Israel should “hold back” on building new settlements “for a little bit.”
“As far as settlements, I’d like to see you hold back on settlements for a little bit. We’ll work something out but I would like to see a deal be made,” Trump said at a joint press conference with Netanyahu at the White House before their meeting.
In response, Netanyahu played down the issue of settlement building. “I believe that the issue of the settlement is not the core of the conflict, nor does it really drive the conflict. I think it’s an issue that has to be resolved in the context of peace negotiations,” Netanyahu said.
Last month, Israel approved the construction of 3,000 housing units in West Bank settlements, amidst a spate of settlement expansion in the wake of Trump’s inauguration.
On Wednesday, Trump also said that he is open to either a one-state or two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a departure from U.S. stance in previous administrations.
“I’m looking at two-state, one-state, and I like the one that both parties like… I can live with either one,” Trump said.
The previous U.S. administrations have pushed for the two-state solution to the Middle East peace process, an idea of establishing an independent Palestinian state that lives side-by-side with Israel. https://wearechange.org/trump-support-abandoning-two-state-solution-netanyahu/

US ‘absolutely’ favors 2-state solution, UN ambassador says

Nikki Haley’s reaffirmation of longstanding American policy comes after Trump walked back commitment to it
By AFP and Times of Israel staff February 16, 2017 - The UN - The US 'absolutely' support the two state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but thinking of new ways to push for a peace deal, US Ambassador Nikki Haley said Thursday.
It would be an “error” to say the United States is abandoning its decades-old policy of backing a Palestinian state as part of a final settlement, she told reporters.
“We absolutely support a two-state solution, but we are thinking out-of-the-box as well,” Haley said following a Security Council meeting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
She repeated her statement of support to the two-state solution three times in response to questions from journalists outside the council chamber.

PRIESTS RE-ENACT TEMPLE FIRST FRUITS OFFERING, PAVING WAY FOR 'GREATER JERUSALEM'
By Adam Eliyahu Berkowitz - June 4, 2017 - On Thursday, the day after the holiday of Shavuot, hundreds of people gathered in the Old CIty of Jerusalem for a reenactment of the Temple service known as bikurim, or the “bringing of the first fruits.” The ceremony included a special thanksgiving offering that sealed the recent Sanhedrin ruling establishing the boundaries of Jerusalem for the Third Temple.
The procession along the walls of the city to Tekuma Park was accompanied by musical instruments specially made for use in the Third Temple, and blasts from shofarot (ram horns), just as the Talmud described it in Temple times.
The ceremony was performed by Kohanim (men of the priestly caste) dressed in authentic garb as described in the Bible, led by Rabbi Baruch Kahane, who has played a prominent role in many of the Temple reenactments.

'ABBAS HAS DECIDED TO SIGN PEACE DEAL WITH ISRAEL'
ByYaakov Katz - May 12, 2017 - Trump planning to launch new round of talks during his upcoming visit.
Donald Trump welcomes Mahmoud Abbas to White House in Washington , May 3, 2017.
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has crossed the Rubicon and voiced “unprecedented” readiness to reach a peace deal with Israel, sources close to the efforts to renew talks between Israel and the Palestinians have told The Jerusalem Post.
Abbas, according to the sources, made this clear to President Donald Trump during their meeting at the White House last week. The president plans to use his trip to Israel later this month to receive assurances from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he, too, is committed to a peace agreement.
Since his meeting with Trump last week, Abbas has changed his rhetoric, issuing a number of statements meant to reflect flexibility on previous demands. He has, for example, said that he would renew the talks under Trump’s auspices without preconditions. In the past, he had said he would not negotiate with Netanyahu without a freeze to settlement construction.
He has also sent his advisers to the press to declare that the Palestinians are prepared to negotiate land swaps with Israel, a recognition that some West Bank settlements will remain part of Israel in the framework of a future deal.
Netanyahu, on the other hand, has largely remained quiet. The strategy within the Prime Minister’s Office in Jerusalem seems to be to wait and hope not to be blamed for preventing the success of the peace talks Trump is planning to restart following his visit on May 22.
As reported earlier this week in Maariv and the Post, the person responsible for this change in Abbas is Ronald Lauder, the American billionaire and head of the World Jewish Congress, who is one of the closest people to Trump. Lauder has publicly said that he has known Trump for over 50 years and that he is a “great and true friend” of Israel.
Before Abbas met with Trump last week, he stopped by Lauder’s house for dinner and got briefed on ways to win over the president. To some, it seems that Lauder has bypassed Sheldon Adelson as the most influential Jew in Trump’s circle.

FIRST 'JACOB'S SHEEP' BORN IN ISRAEL IN 2 MILLENNIA - DOES THIS POINT TO THIRD TEMPLE?
Breaking Israel News - June 13, 2017 - The precious flock of 119 Jacob's Sheep, a rare breed experts believe originated in Israel, finally returned in November after a journey of 2,000 years. (Public Domain Pictures) After a journey as dramatic as anything in the Bible, the first Jacob's Sheep born in the land of Israel in over two millennia made their auspicious appearance last month in the Jordan Valley. One Torah Codes expert found an amazingly precise and detailed description of the flock's arrival and the role it will play in bringing the third temple.
The precious flock of 119 Jacob's Sheep, a rare breed experts believe originated in Israel, finally returned in November after a journey of 2,000 years. Experts believe the unique breed, originally raised by Jacob, accompanied the Hebrews into slavery in Egypt and spread from there to North Africa. The Moors traded them to Spain, and then to England. Collectors have since brought them to North America. Considered a "heritage" breed, meaning the sheep retain many of their genetic traits, they thrive in desert climes and have four horns.
Despite the nearly nonstop travel that brought them from Western Canada to central Israel, the 30 pregnant ewes were as hardy as their biblical ancestors, birthing healthy lambs in the Jordan Valley's Sde Trumot, as their ancestors did in the time of the biblical patriarchs.

ARI HAROW, THE MAN WHO COULD BRING DOWN THE PRIME MINISTER
The US-born Netanyahu confidant and former chief of staff has signed an agreement to testify against his old boss
By Times of Israel staff August 5, 2017, 4:46 am 1
hose who know Ari Harow describe him as a straight arrow. Now some believe he could be the one to bring down Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. For years Harow, 44, has been one of Netanyahu's closest confidants and a chief cog in his political machine. But despite this, he has remained largely unknown to the Israeli public until now, when it was revealed on Friday that Harow had signed an agreement to turn state's witness as part of ongoing investigations into alleged corruption by Israel's premier.
Harow is very "low-key and discreet," Odelia Karmon, a former Netanyahu adviser told Channel 2 news, calling him very modest and someone who was never involved in the political intrigue that so often dogged Netanyahu's inner circle. "He is a very straight man."
Harow fits the mold of the type that Netanyahu has frequently chosen to head his office; young American-Israelis from the national religious camp.
[Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (R) and his then-chief of staff Ari Harow (left) arrive at a Likud faction meeting in the Knesset, November 24, 2014. (Miriam Alster/Flash90)]
While others have sought the limelight like Jewish Home party leader Naftali Bennett, or current Israeli Ambassador to the US Ron Dermer, Harow stayed largely in the background despite several stints in the high-profile position as Netanyahu's chief of staff. Harow was born in Los Angeles but moved with his family to Israel in 1985, when he was 12, living in the West Bank settlement of Karnei Shomron. After completing his army service he moved back to the US to study in New York, before returning again to finish a Master's degree in Political Science from Tel Aviv University. It was at this time that he first stated working with Netanyahu, volunteering for him in 2002 as an adviser on Diaspora affairs, and more crucially on fundraising.
He then moved back to the US for several years where he headed the American Friends of Likud.
It was during this period that he was first linked to allegations of financial irregularities surrounding Netanyahu and the so-called Bibi Tours scandal in which, as finance minister a decade ago, Netanyahu had private donors and organizations fund most of his trips as well as cover travel expenses for his wife and children, and failed to clear the information with the Knesset.
According to the Haaretz daily, the American Friends of Likud were also paying the salary of Karmon, who was working as Netanyahu's media adviser.
The Bibi-tours issue was first reported by Channel 10 in 2011 and, while a state comptroller's report found ethical problems, no charges were ever filed. Continued:

NETANYAHU'S EX-CHIEF OF STAFF TURNS STATE'S WITNESS

In key development, Ari Harow, under investigation since 2015, signs deal; said set to offer testimony in two corruption probes involving PM
By Raoul Wootliff and Times of Israel staff August 4, 2017, 1:39 pm 24
Ari Harow, a former chief of staff and aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, signed a deal on Friday to turn state's witness as part of ongoing investigations into alleged corruption by Israel's premier.
According to a statement from the Israel Police, Harow is expected to receive six months of community service and a NIS 700,000 fine ($193,000) on breach of trust charges in exchange for his testimony against his former boss. News of the deal, seen by observers as a turning point in the police investigations, follows a gag order imposed Thursday on details pertaining to the case.
It came a day after Israeli police explicitly said for the first time that a number of corruption investigations involving Netanyahu deal with "bribery, fraud and breach of trust." The police stopped short of saying that the Israeli leader was directly suspected of these crimes.
Harow has been under investigation since mid-2015 on suspicion of using his ties to Netanyahu to advance his private business interests. Police have recommended he be indicted for bribery and breach of trust in the case, but the attorney general has yet to file formal charges.
The investigations into Harow sparked at least one corruption investigation of Netanyahu himself, after investigators uncovered recordings on Harow's computer of meetings between Netanyahu and Yedioth Ahronoth publisher Arnon Mozes in late 2014 and early 2015. In the recordings, the two seemed to discuss an illicit quid pro quo deal that would have seen the prime minister hobble a rival daily, the Sheldon Adelson-backed Israel Hayom, through Knesset legislation in return for more favorable coverage from Yedioth.
That investigation, dubbed Case 2000 by police, is ongoing, as is a separate corruption investigation - Case 1000 - into allegations the prime minister received illicit gifts from billionaire benefactors. Harow is reportedly willing to provide information in both probes, having served as chief of staff during the time of the alleged deal with Mozes and while Netanyahu is said to have received gifts worth thousands of shekels.
Harow first worked for Netanyahu as foreign affairs adviser during his stint as leader of the opposition. He then spearheaded the 2009 election campaign that catapulted Netanyahu back into office. Following the election, he served as the prime minister's bureau chief until 2010, managing Netanyahu's schedule and advising him on a range of issues.
Harow took a break from politics in 2010, when he founded 3H Global. He later returned as chief of staff of the Prime Minister's Office in 2014, serving there for a year before leaving to run the 2015 election campaign for Netanyahu's Likud party. PALESTINIAN CHRISTIANS, MUSLIMS COME TOGETHER OVER AL-AQSA PROTESTS

By ed el-Komi- July 27, 2017 - AhmGAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Video footage showing Nidal Aboud, a young Palestinian Christian man, reading his Bible amid a crowd of Muslims performing Friday prayers July 21 in front of Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem created a buzz on social media. Palestinian activists saw the video as an example of coexistence between Muslims and Christians in Jerusalem and an expression of a shared fate against Israeli measures in the city. Palestinians have been staging sit-ins for a week and a half now in the streets of Jerusalem and around Al-Aqsa Mosque denouncing Israel's attempt to install metal detectors at the entrances of Al-Aqsa Mosque to search worshippers.
Palestinian Christian youths and activists have also participated in these sit-ins to express their rejection of these measures, even though they target Al-Aqsa Mosque, a religious symbol of Muslims. Aboud, 24, from Mount Olivet in Jerusalem, seen praying among thousands of Muslims, told Al-Monitor that he participated in the sit-in in front of Al-Aqsa Mosque as an act of patriotism. He said, “A day before the sit-in, I saw on TV an elderly Palestinian in a wheelchair crying because he was not allowed to pray at Al-Aqsa Mosque. I was deeply touched and felt I must act out to end this. This is why I decided to take part in the sit-in in front of Al-Aqsa Mosque and took my cross and Bible with me. I was there at 8 a.m. the next day in front of one of the mosque's entrances.”

ISRAELI AND PALESTINIAN DEMONSTRATORS TAKE PART IN A RALLY IN SUPPORT OF PEACE NEAR WEST BANK CITY OF JERICHO

Most Israelis, Palestinians are tired of fighting. Jared Kushner, the man entrusted by the president of the United States with reviving Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations, admitted this week that he had no idea how to do it. Summary: Print Israeli right-wing legislators do all they can to keep the two-state solution at a distance, yet a majority of Israelis still support it.
By Akiva Eldar - August 3, 2017 - TranslatorRuti Sinai - “Everyone finds an issue” that blocks progress, the Trump son-in-law and senior White House adviser complained in a closed-door meeting with a group of congressional interns July 31. He suggested that instead, “let’s focus on, how do you come up with a conclusion to the situation." True, there are those who specialize in finding “issues,” but the people undermining the solution to the “situation” are those who invent problems where none exist. Thousands of words have been written about the diplomatic implications of the Temple Mount metal detector problem invented by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (the detectors were placed at the site after the July 14 attack on Israeli police officers). People say that once bitten, twice shy. Netanyahu is among those who once bitten rushes into the lion’s den — or, in this case, East Jerusalem. Unfortunately for him and for us, there is no trained, experienced handler to save him and us from this trouble. PALESTINIAN PRESIDENT MAHMOUD ABBAS SPEAKS DURING A MEETING WITH CHINESE PRESIDENT XI JINPING AT THE GREAT HALL OF THE PEOPLE IN BEIJING, CHINA

July 18, 2017. (photo by REUTERS/Mark Schiefelbein) - Palestinians warn Abbas could dismantle PA in 2018 - The Temple Mount crisis and violence has left the Palestinian leadership in Ramallah extremely frustrated. While the goal to restore the status quo on the Temple Mount/Haram al-Sharif was achieved and the Israeli government indeed dismantled all security measures July 25 at the entrances to the Temple Mount, the credit for this in the Palestinian public opinion went to the radicals. The Palestinians feel that Hamas and the northern branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel, not President Mahmoud Abbas or King Abdullah of Jordan, are the ones who forced Israel to capitulate. Summary: Print Palestinians warn that President Mahmoud Abbas might decide at the beginning of 2018 to dismantle the Palestinian Authority and cancel the Oslo Accord.
By Uri Savir - August 6, 2017 - Translator Inga Michaeli - A senior Palestinian minister, an official with an extensive security background who is close to Abbas, told Al-Monitor on condition of anonymity that the Fatah leadership is currently extremely concerned over the nature of the Palestinian struggle in the eyes of the Palestinians and the Arab and Muslim world. The leadership fears that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security measures near Al-Aqsa Mosque added a religious layer to the national conflict.

JORDANIAN KING'S RAMALLAH VISIT MORE THAN MORALE BOOSTER

By Osama Al Sharif - August 11, 2017 - Jordanian King Abdullah’s Aug. 7 visit to Ramallah, his first in five years, was symbolically important for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and was also intended to send signals to a number of other parties. Abdullah flew by helicopter from Amman to Abbas’ headquarters in the wake of two incidents that have tested Jordan's tenuous relations with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Israel: the crisis over Haram al-Sharif (to Jews, the Temple Mount) that erupted July 14 and the killing of two Jordanians in Amman on July 23 by an Israeli security guard at the Israeli Embassy, which remains closed.
Abdullah's two-hour visit to Ramallah was seen by some observers as a snub to Netanyahu and a morale booster for Abbas. Palestinian sources told Al-Monitor that having suspended security coordination with Israel on July 30 to protest unilateral security measures it took at Haram al-Sharif, the site of Al-Aqsa Mosque, Abbas preferred to stay in the occupied territories rather than request a permit from the Israelis to travel abroad in accordance with bilateral agreements. Some reports suggested that he was confined to his residence by Israel in retaliation for his decision. He was also reported to have checked in to a local hospital, suffering from exhaustion. PALESTINIANS MAY BE ON VERGE OF CHARTING NEW POLITICAL PATH

By Daoud Kuttab - August 16, 2017 - At a time of political indecisiveness and the absence of a vision or agreed-upon strategy, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) is seriously considering calling a full session of the Palestinian National Council (PNC), its decision-making body. At an Aug. 9 meeting, Fatah's Central Committee recommended convening the PNC “with the participation of all parties,” a clear reference to Hamas. Such a session could bring new blood to the organization. A full PNC session convened with a quorum would allow members to approve a new political direction for the PLO and elect members to the PLO’s Central Committee and Executive Committee. Such changes would set the stage for a leadership transition. Palestinian President and PLO Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, 82, who is having health issues, has repeatedly said that he will not run for president in future general elections. Continued:

PALESTINIANS TO GIVE TRUMP TEAM ULTIMATUM ON PEACE PLAN

By Shlomi Eldar - August 21, 2017 - Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas surprised participants of an Aug. 20 meeting at his Ramallah headquarters with members of the left-wing Israeli Meretz Party when he launched a broadside attack on the Trump administration just days ahead of a planned visit to the region by Trump's top envoys, Jared Kushner and Jason Greenblatt. Abbas said he had met with the American representatives 20 times since Trump took office in January, but he was no closer to understanding what Israeli-Palestinian peace plan they have in mind. “Each time they reiterate their commitment to a two-state solution and the stop to settlement building. I urge them to tell [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu that, but they refrain,” he said.
The Israelis were not the only ones taken aback by Abbas’ remarks. Senior Palestinian officials present at the meeting were, too. The Palestinian Authority (PA) has, after all, trod wearily with the Americans until recently in an effort to achieve legitimacy in the eyes of the new administration. Abbas set up a top-level team, including experts on US politics, in a bid to decipher the nature of the new president and the best way to approach him. The group even scored some points: Trump rolled back his election campaign commitment to move the American Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and even hosted Abbas last May at the White House less than four months after moving in. But since then, the Palestinians are under the impression that the Trump administration is not interested in getting entangled in the complex task of restarting the moribund Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, which have been the undoing of many previous administrations that were far more focused. “I don't understand their conduct toward us, as inside his country the administration is in chaos,” the Palestinian president was quoted as saying.
Al-Monitor has learned that Abbas’ remarks to the Meretz delegation were only the prelude to far harsher talking points he has prepared for his Aug. 24 meeting with the Trump envoys. A senior Palestinian source who spoke on condition of anonymity said a decision had been reached after lengthy negotiations at top PA levels, including consultations with its team of Trump experts, to present Kushner and Greenblatt with a clear ultimatum: Unless progress is made within 45 days on launching talks with the Israelis, the Palestinians will consider themselves no longer committed to the US channel and will turn to an alternative plan on which they have been working for the past two years.
The Palestinian source explained that Abbas is running out of the time he has to govern and cannot spend what little time he has left as president on “games.” The source believes a month and a half is sufficient time for the White House to decide whether to take an active and real part in mediating between the Palestinians and Israel — in other words, whether the administration plans to publicly declare that the United States regards the two-state solution as the only solution and demand that Netanyahu stop creating facts on the ground (that is, building settlements) and settle down to real negotiations. “If we don’t hear within a month and a half that the American team has stopped talking and started doing, Abbas intends to mobilize anyone and everyone he can for the UN General Assembly session on the establishment of a Palestinian state, regardless of the Israeli and American reactions,” said the official from Ramallah. http://www.al-monitor.com/pulse/originals/2017/08/israel-pa-us-donald-trump-jared-kushner-mahmoud-abbas.html
